Art for

living

 – By A.P.Verma

“The art for living” is not considered to be very reliable and lucrative. But exception to every rule is possible like “Purushottam Kumar” a computer professional artist (painting). Born in Nalanda, he spent his childhood in Patna and very consciously developed love and devotion for visual art in general and painting in particular in close proximity with late Sikander Hussain the noted artist (painting) –a product of local Bihar College of Arts and Crafts and the then Director (Art) at Deepayatan the State resource centre for adult literacy . Hussain always guided and encouraged Purushottam to seriously pursue drawing and painting. In return he was keen to learn as also to take part in exhibitions and competitions of drawing and painting Organized in State capital. While he was studying at 10+0 level courses at Bihar Vidyapeeth Swablamban High School, the school founded by late Jai Prakash Narain during emergency days with sole aim to make  students self-reliant from very childhood and come forwarded to lead the total revolution for full liberty of mankind. Purushottam representing his school took part in State level painting competition organized by NCERT. He was adjudged winner there and awarded a sum of Rs. 100/- in cash. Awards of certificates and cups are numerous to his credit. The appreciation of his work of art in this way kept his passion for art live and growing consistently. With the aforesaid cash Award money he purchased cricket bat-ball for his locality team. The energy stored by way of participation in cricket he could involve still deeper in painting and it remained his first love altogether.

After pursuing 10+0 examination he ventured to revolt his father, a mechanical engineer by Profession who wanted Purushottam to step-down into his own shoes. Purushottam informed his father his irrevocable intention to undergo formal education in painting and not the 10+2 Science – be it Mathematics or Biology. His parent having serious doubt about gainful economic survival of an artist without measuring fully well the depth Purushottam had acquired by then in painting, tried their level best to persuade to take up +2 Mathematics course at local Bihar College of Engineering under Patna University; of course with intervention of Hussain who promised to guide Purushottam still further on each weekend. So while doing +2 courses at one of the premier institution he was guided to keep the spark burning to create on an average one work of art a week – be it landscape, cityscape, life study or simple copy of acclaimed work of famous artists.

As soon as he completed his +2 Science course he became restless to join the formal course in painting. As there was no enough time to purchase application and apply on prescribed forms he opted to a novel route. He selected five works of art in support of his originality and depth in painting and photographed them. He, then, sent those representative photographs of work of art with application on plain paper seeking admission in formal painting course to five leading seats of learning in painting in India, where he was supposed to secure admission if at all he was to study fine art (painting). his efforts bore fruit and , to his pleasant surprise the Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda appreciating his works of art took unprecedented step of calling him directly for aptitude test and taking the formal application there itself at the time of test only. After five long days of aptitude test he was declared selected comfortably to the expectations of Sikander Hussain. He successfully completed his four years degree course followed by two years of post graduation (+4+2) at Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda.

Graphics being his field of specialization, landscape remained his field of creativity which he never ceased to dim. His paintings enthrall viewers from within and they are simply superb. His acclaimed works of art have started to come in and numerous of them are yet to come.

Purushottam while completing his degree course there at Baroda kept himself associated with other cultural activities too. “Spic-Macay” the non-governmental organization working for furtherance of Classical Music was one of them. Using the skill he learnt, he fabricated his own screen printing facility and screen printed posters for Spic- Macay’s musical event. The poster full of

creativity was very much appreciated by his M.S. University fraternity and Purushottam slowly and surely started gaining popularity at Baroda, and so his screen printing facility. He kept his screen printing facility since then, running for “earning while learning” to meet his expenses. His screen printing out-puts were unique piece of art and not just ordinary commercial reproduction sort of things. He mastered prints invented and available the best skills of fine screen prints invented and available world over irrespective of the cost involved. The part time economic activity supported him in deeply pursuing his field of specialization – the Graphics. He never says “no” to those in search of fine artistic screen prints comparable to offset prints in unparallel accurate colour, design, texture and tin

Educational tours to the State and Union Territories of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Rajasthan, Goa, Delhi, Pondicheri and Chandigrah have made him well versed of the composite culture of India inherit and later on reflected in his work of art. To his opinion nature is the greatest work of art we should never fail to see and enjoy in all its forms and variations. Each of the out-station stay inspires him to create, he admits and on return he seldom fails to gift spectators a new work of art preferably in the form of landscape full of emotions and aesthetic appeal. Within an abstract structure, with bright and sharp-edged coloures we see forms like leaves, branches, trees, water-bodies, hillocks, etc. as reminiscent of landscape visited by him.

It is not the end of story the author of these lines intended to present but the most fascinating is yet to be deliberated. Having +4+2 M.S. University qualifications from its Faculty of Fine Arts which is considered as one of the best seat of learning in fine arts (painting) it was not difficult for him to get the gainful employment, but he opted to expand his screen printing facility. He is of the view that to be in a job either Government or Private and at the same time to remain creative and professional cannot go together. So he joined the computer course in order to explore the possibilities of accommodating the whole world of imagination upon the spread sheet of computer in the form of digital electronic memory. The choice of riot of coloures with numerous flexibilities to work with and that too at negligible recurring cost in comparison with traditional painting on canvass with chemical based pigments mixed oil coloures attracted Purushottam to finally select the computer as his medium of creativity and producing works of art in the form of digital electronic computer memory. Through the electronic memory stored in the computer the wonder machine, one can copy as many originals of work of art as one desires leaving the memory intact. So one can get originals of work of art at comparatively lower price. Once a work of art is completed on computer the same can easily be displayed to million of viewers and intending buyers through internet, all over the world. So, Purushottam a contemporary computer artist (Painting) feels comfortable where he is free from the dictat of any kind. He is not supposed to work under the boss with little or no knowledge of art in his present professional Endeavour. I

In this way Purushottam is striving to prove art for living a viable proposition, through digital computer graphics. With the same zeal and vigour that propelled him to emerge winner in the fifteen kilometers race leaving behind his opponents at annual sports event of Bihar College of Engineering, he is set to revolutionise the painting with the use of computer, not only in and around Baroda but far beyond its geographical and political boundaries.
